Ford is Revamping the Explorer SUV For the First Time Since 2011

After decades as America’s preferred SUV, Ford’s veteran Explorer range has received a much-needed update in the form of the 2020 Ford Explorer SUV. Scroll for more information.

Unveiled in January 2019 at the North American International Auto Show, the 2020 Explorer is already attracting a lot of attention. Even without a V8 option, the 2020 Explorer boasts one of the most powerful engines in the SUV market. At this point in time, Ford is offering two petrol engine options: a 2.3-liter four-cylinder and a 3-liter twin turbocharged V6. Ford has also announced a gas-electric variant of the 2020 Explorer.

The Explorer’s redesigned drive system is arguably the most significant update since the release of the 2011 Explorer. Following the upgrade to 10-speed transmission, the 2020 Explorer switched to rear-wheel drive. Ford has justified the switch by highlighting three key improvements – a tighter turning circle, more efficient distribution of weight, and better optimized suspension functions.

In terms of inner and outer appearance, Ford has kept things simple. The overall exterior design of the Explorer has remained unchanged aside from a more acute front-to-back roof slope. Thanks to the adoption of aluminum reinforcement, the chassis itself is more than 200 pounds lighter than previous models.

With remote control seat movement, you are free to tweak available leg room depending on the number of passengers. The forward instrument panel has also received an upgrade, sporting a 12.3-inch LCD screen running Ford’s infotainment system.

Perhaps the most significant change in the revamped Explorer is the vastly improved Co-Pilot360 safety suite. This safety package includes autonomous emergency breaking, pedestrian and multi-lane traffic detection, automatic high beam dimming, and rearview proximity sensor alerts.

Depending on your feature preference, you can supplement the Co-Pilot360 suite with other state-of-the-art safety protocols. These systems include advanced steering assistance, speed sign cruise control, and self-directed parking.

The 2020 Explorer offers a wide array of family-friendly features, including cup-holders, Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, multiple USB ports, and 2500 liters of boot space. You can also make use of ISOFIX children’s seat anchorage points along the second and third seat rows.
